In fact, the only mention of using this device is for capturing and burning directly to DVD, but I want to capture to file so I can edit the videos before burning to DVD.
The Help files are useless as they only seem to talk about capturing from DIGITAL camcorders connected via USB or Firewire, not through the USB capture device - despite the product being called *VHS* to DVD. I asked on the Roxio support forums and a couple of people said they had no problems like this, but they were in the US so presumably using NTSC tapes - maybe the signalling system is different and gaps in the tape aren't detected (still a carrier signal perhaps?). so you are supposed to be able to set a tape playing and go and do something else while it captures but you can't because of the above signal detection problem. It has a feature where you can select to capture for a set length of time - 30, 60, 90 minutes etc. It's supposed to be PAL-B but even if you set it to that in the Options and save it randomly changes to PAL-I or even NTSC!!!!!! Guess it struggles if the signal quality falls. It also has problems detecting the video type. It then takes several seconds to detect when the signal starts again and re-enable the Capture button - then a dialogue pops up saying that capture has ended and do you want to save the file. unused tape) it displays No Signal and stops capturing. The biggest problem by far is that as soon as there is even a 1 second break in the video (i.e. I've got about 4 hours of video taken on a Canon E300 8mm camcorder and despite fighting this useless product for a couple of weeks still haven't copied it all.
